How to stop binge-watching Netflix on your computer

Updated 14 October 2026

The short answer

Start by turning off autoplay: in a browser, open your Netflix account, choose your profile, open Playback settings and uncheck “Autoplay next episode in a series on all devices”. To keep Netflix shut at night on your computer, add netflix.com to a blocker such as Stillwood with your own hours, for example 23:00–07:00, and set it to “Closed”.

Why one episode becomes four

When an episode ends, the next one starts on a countdown. Stopping takes an action and carrying on takes none. Remove that default and the end of an episode becomes a real choice again.

Step 1: turn off autoplay

  1. Open Netflix in a browser and go to Account.
  2. Open Profiles, choose your profile and open Playback settings.
  3. Uncheck Autoplay next episode in a series on all devices. You can also uncheck Autoplay previews while browsing on all devices.
  4. Save. If nothing changes right away, switch to another profile and back to reload the setting.

The setting belongs to the profile, so it applies on every device where that profile is used, your TV included.

Step 2: close Netflix at night on your computer

  1. Install Stillwood for Chrome and pick Netflix on the first screen.
  2. Choose My own days and hours and set the hours you want to protect, for example every day from 23:00 to 07:00. Windows that cross midnight work.
  3. In settings, switch Netflix to Closed to keep it shut during those hours, or leave Pause & ask why for a gentler stop.

With a pause, Stillwood asks what’s pulling you back. Late at night the honest answer is often “Tired”, and sleep helps with that more than another episode.

Step 3: decide before you press play

Pick the number of episodes before you start, and tell someone or write it down. Another trick is to stop a few minutes before the end, before the cliffhanger sets up the next episode.

Questions

Does turning off autoplay work on my TV too?

Yes. The setting is saved to your Netflix profile and applies on every device that profile is used on.

Can I block Netflix only at night?

Yes. In Stillwood choose “My own days and hours” and set a window like 23:00–07:00. Windows that cross midnight are supported.

Will Stillwood block Netflix on my TV or phone?

No. It works in Chrome on your computer. On a TV, turning off autoplay is the main tool.
