How to block Facebook on your computer during work
Updated 14 October 2026
The short answer
Add facebook.com to a website blocker extension such as Stillwood and set it to your work hours. If you manage a page, group or ads for work, Stillwood lets you in for 10 minutes when you say you need it for work. The hosts file blocks Facebook completely, with no schedule.
Method 1: pause Facebook with Stillwood
- Install Stillwood for Chrome and pick Facebook on the first screen.
- Choose Weekdays, 9:00–18:00 or set your own days and hours.
- When you open Facebook during those hours, Stillwood pauses for a few seconds and asks what’s pulling you there.
- If you run a page, a group or ads, choose Need it for work and type what you need to do. Facebook opens for 10 minutes, and Stillwood brings you back when the time is up.
- If you never need Facebook at work, switch it to “Closed” in settings.
Method 2: block it in the hosts file
Add these lines to your hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts on Windows, /etc/hosts on Mac) and restart the browser:
127.0.0.1 facebook.com127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com127.0.0.1 m.facebook.com
Facebook stops loading in every browser on that computer, including for work tasks, until you edit the file again.
Method 3: make the feed less sticky
- When you only want to see what people you know posted, open Feeds and choose Friends or Favorites instead of the main feed.
- Turn off browser notifications for facebook.com in Chrome under Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Notifications.
- Sign out of Facebook in the browser you use for work.
Questions
Can I block Facebook only during work hours?
Yes. Choose “Weekdays, 9:00–18:00” or set your own days and hours. Outside them Facebook works as usual.
What if I need Facebook for my job?
Choose “Need it for work” on the pause screen and type what you need to do. Facebook opens for 10 minutes, then Stillwood brings you back.
Does this block the Facebook app on my phone?
No. A Chrome extension only works in that browser. On a phone, use Screen Time on iPhone or Digital Wellbeing on Android.
